6 Safety Gadgets for Solo Female Travelers
Stock up on safety gadgets for solo female travelers, such as personal alarms, door stoppers, and anti-theft bags.
Traveling solo as a woman offers an incredible opportunity for empowerment and self-discovery. Yet, safety must be a top consideration. In addition to checking the Travel Ladies’ safety index for safety ratings and reviews from other female travelers, equip yourself with a few simple gadgets to stay safe.
While pepper spray and tasers are great, they often aren't allowed on airplanes and may be restricted in some travel destinations, making them less ideal for international travelers. Here are six other tools to enhance personal security on your solo adventures.
Personal safety alarm: This device emits a loud sound when activated, designed to deter attackers and alert nearby help. Small and easy to carry, it fits on a keychain or in a purse. The one I linked is the Birdie device, developed by two women and used by over 700,000 people around the world.
Apple Air tags: I cannot tell you the relief I felt when I started to use AirTags. Knowing exactly where my items are provides an elevated level of confidence. When traveling, I bury one in all my checked and personal bags and on any key ring or wallet I’m carrying as well.
If you’re traveling solo, be sure to share your phone’s location with multiple trusted people. Share your itinerary, plans, and check in regularly. As an extra measure, pop an air tag into a pocket and share that location too. That way, if you’re separated from your phone or bag for whatever reason, you’re still on a trusted friend’s radar.
Anti-theft backpack: While I recommend opting for a cross-body Fanny pack over a backpack, if you are needing the extra space of a larger bag, make sure you’re doing what you can to secure it. Amazon has tons of options for cute, slim - and most importantly, anti-theft - backpacks with features like slash-resistant straps and panels, locking zippers, RFID-protection technology, and special pockets for cards and passports.
Door stopper: This carry-on bag-friendly gadget prevents the hotel door from being opened from the outside, providing an added layer of security while you sleep. I have even used one of these in my apartment for a little more peace of mind when I close my eyes at night.
Door lock: An alternative to the door stopper, a portable door lock also serves to enhance your hotel room security. It's easy to install on most doors and is a great way to add an extra layer of safety, ensuring that you can sleep more soundly.
Portable chargers: Do not travel without portable chargers. Not only do you not want to run out of battery juice for pictures, it’s a safety concern. You don’t want to be stuck without the ability to look up directions, call for help, or request an Uber. During my longest travel days, I can go through a full battery AND two portable chargers, so stock up!
Equipping yourself with a few of these gadgets can make all the difference in navigating new landscapes with peace of mind. Travel smart, stay vigilant, trust your instincts, and enjoy every moment of your solo adventures with confidence.
